Thousands of British travellers will be packing their bags and heading to Tenerife in December: the most popular destination for Holiday Extras customers this coming month. Set in the vast Atlantic Ocean off the northwest African coast, Tenerife and the other Canary Islands are ideally placed to offer the year-round sunshine and water sports that many of us Brits crave.
We want to help make your travel easy, and help you make the most of your holiday, so we’ve put together some great ideas for getting out on the water in the warm winter sunshine.
Things to do in Tenerife’s waters
A steady wind direction with great waves, and the very pleasant water temperature even in winter, make Tenerife a mecca for water sports nuts. Take your pick of all the popular ocean activities, from diving and surfing, to windsurfing, water skiing and kayaking.
Ski Reg is a Tenerife legend, teaching fun-seekers of all abilities to water ski from Puerto Colon, whilst Palm Beach surf school in Playa de las Americas will get you out on that board once and for all. If a big banana, fly fish or jet ski is more likely to float your boat, take a look at Water Sports Tenerife.
The waters surrounding Tenerife are home to frolicking dolphins, whales and turtles as well as plentiful fish including marlin, shark, tuna, and the wonderfully named wahoo.
You’d be mad not to take a boat trip, go deep sea fishing or maybe even treat yourself to a private charter to see these amazing creatures in their natural habitat. The very popular Tenerife Sailing Charters offers a range of boat trips and charters around the island. Good news for families, children under 10 go half price.

‘Parrot Park’ in Puerto de la Cruz is a large zoo which features an aquarium and sea life centre.
The aquarium has 12 themed exhibits in 1,200,000 litres of Atlantic sea water. Orca Ocean is a collaboration between Loro Parque and Sea World (USA) and is home to seven killer whales. There’s also a dolphinarium with 10 bottle-nose dolphins in 7,000,000 litres of sea water; four species of black and white cuties at Planet Penguin; and a colony of sea lions.
This holiday favourite is packed with land-lubbing animals too, including anteaters, Bengal tigers, birds, chimps and gorillas, jaguars, meerkats, otters and reptiles.
Based on the south of the island at Marina San Miguel, Submarine Safari has taken hundreds of thousands of Canary Island visitors to the bottom of the Atlantic for a sneaky peak at life under the ocean.
The specially-designed tourist submarine craft are comfortable and spacious, with normal air conditions suitable for everyone including pregnant women and those with heart and ear conditions. They are powered entirely by battery, so there’s no danger of oils or other pollutants escaping into the sea.
The business has developed its diving area into a natural underwater marine park, attracting stingrays who are cared for by the divers.
Submarine Safari provides a free bus service from all Tenerife’s major resorts. If you book online you’ll get a 15% discount on the standard price.
For many of us, a holiday is not complete without a pant-wetting ride down a near-vertical water slide. Thankfully Tenerife provides two great water parks for you to experience such a thrill.
Siam Park in Costa Adeje is a relative newcomer, describing itself as “Europe’s most spectacular water park”. With attractions including The Giant, Nagaracer, The Dragon, Tower of Power and the Wave Palace, it’s definitely a huge experience.
The park’s dedicated double decker buses collect visitors from Los Cristianos, Playa de las Americas and Costa Adeje.
Aqualand, also in Costa Adeje, is not as new and shiny but is gradually being updated and suits younger families. A good selection of technicolour water slides will keep you entertained, from the Twister and Tornado to Super Slalom, Twister Racer and Crazy Race. The dinkier thrill-seekers in your party can hit Kidzworld with Crazy Race Jr, Fun Lighthouse, Dragon Land and Forest Land. There are more family-friendly rides including Family Adventure Land, Water’s Castle and the Wave Pool. And don’t miss Aqualand’s award-winning dolphin show.
