Here’s our selection of the top travel apps available now, taking you from booking your break to finding out how much you just tipped that crazy cab driver on the way to your hotel. And they’re all free.

Kayak
This super-popular travel app allows you to compare hundreds of flights, car hire deals and hotels. You can also book your hotel room via the app and manage your itinerary or track your flight status. Available for iPhone, iPad, Android, Windows Mobile 7 and Kindle devices.

TripAdvisor city guides
Thanks to Tom in Holiday Extras Short Breaks for this tip! Download your city guide including restaurants, attractions, hotels and reviews; then access it off-line when you’re there so there are no data roaming charges. Available for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad.

TripIt
Impress your friends and family with your organisational skills by downloading this clever little app. Forward your travel confirmation emails and it will create an itinerary for your holiday. This can be customised by adding maps, directions, pictures and notes; and accessed online anytime so you won’t find yourself frantically searching for those dog-eared print-outs. Available for iPhone, iPad, Android, Windows Mobile 7 and Blackberry.

Live Traffic Info
You’ll be well-prepared for the drive to the airport with live traffic information straight from the Highways Agency National Traffic Control Centre. This app homes in on your current location to give you relevant information about traffic on motorways and major A roads, so you’ll be ready for any roadworks, accidents and delays. Available for iPhone and Android.

XE Currency
This snazzy currency conversion app is popular across the globe, with its live information on every world currency (more than 180) and handy calculator. It also saves data for offline use. Available on iPhone, iPad, Android, Windows Mobile 7, Windows 8 and Blackberry.
